Update on choosing between WordPress and WordPress MU
My idea of installing two lots of separate WordPress installations on my server so that Helloo ! and Shoot! had their own separate identities and their own databases did NOTwork as perfectly as I thought it would!
Both weblogs functioned fine. But then I discovered that I could not claim the Shoot ! blog in MyBlogLog nor in Technorati. This meant that there were audiences that I could not target, and who might never see my photo gallery blog.
I playing around with moving the Helloo ! WordPress installation files away from the root directory into a sub-directory, and changing settings in the database – following helpful video instructions from EduChalk.org. But even with this method, both blogs continued to look as if they were working independently, but Shoot ! could still not be recognised by MyBlogLog nor Technorati.
I then created a sub-domain for Shoot ! in CPanel. That didn’t work either. I have to admit that, at this point, an hour or so later, I experienced a total block and cursed myself for not taking notes as I went along, writing down what I was changing. (I always mean to in these situations of experiementation, but find relying on my memory is easier than encrypting my scribbled hieroglyphics!).
I took a coffee break….. and then two things occurred to me. Firstly, that since I enjoyed posting on the two blogs, so what if I couldn’t claim one of them on MyBlogLog or Technorati when Google Search recognised both of them. Secondly, I would be content to have Shoot! show up on Helloo ! as a page link.
If you visit Helloo ! (a portal for background information), at the top of the page and quite prominent for all the world to see, is a page link which redirects straight to Shoot ! (a photo gallery).
I was worried at one point that I would have to start from scratch and use WordPress MU, but in this case it wasn’t necessary. I’m pleased with my results.
