LOCAL INFORMATION
Around Casa Rural Espino there are many interesting places you can visit during your stay. Either up to 30 minutes away on foot or by car you can visit:
  • Natural parks - Sierra Tejada and Almijara.

  • Neolithic caves.

  • The sulphur baths of the Majadas.

  • Zalia Fortress, built by the Phoenicians.

  • The Mesa of Zalia with its legendary Neolithic village.

  • The Boquete (natural gap in the mountain) and Polje of  Zafarraya created by glaciation.

  • Lake Viñuela.

  • The monumental city of Velez Málaga.

  • Nerja - “The Balcony of Europe” and its famous caves.

  • And a strange mystery, only a few metres from the house: footprints on a rock, which local people know as “Jesus Christ footprints”.

The house is ideally located to make trips to the main cities of Andalucia. In less than one hour by car you can go to:

  • Málaga - only 65 kms away is the city of the Costa del Sol where you can visit the Cathedral, Alcazaba and Gibralfaro (Muslim fortress). Also the famous Picasso Museum, La Concepcion Botanical Garden, and of course the calm, warm water of the Mediterranean beaches.

  • Granada - only 75 kms away has one of the most visited monuments in Spain, The Alhambra. Also the Cathedral and the southernmost ski station in Europe, Sierra Nevada.

For walking lovers, the house is located in a cross road of the old “realengas” which were used by the shepherds to move their animals. These can be used today as walking routes. We suggest the following two routes, or sections of them:

  • Route 1: Espino Hamlet to Periana. Distance: 12 km.
The path goes north from Espino to the “Zafarraya Gap” in the Granada province, then turn left along the old railway going through the tunnel in the rocks. The path goes along Alhama Mountain and finishes in Periana village where there is a beautiful view of all the Axarquia region and the sea.

  • Route 2: Espino – Las Majadas – El Alcazar. Distance: 14 km.
Next to Espino fountain, walk up the hill to La Mojonera and take the track to the left to La Torrecilla and into the Natural Park of Sierra Tejeda. You will then find the picnic areas of Alcauca and Alcazar.
